Sermon Passage: 1 John 2:1-6

Sermon Title: Jesus: Our Beloved Advocate

Sermon Big Idea: As believers, we are freed from sin’s power but not its presence. When we fall, Jesus is our advocate, securing our forgiveness and growth. We live faithfully not to earn salvation but in response to it. Because we love and trust Jesus, we commit to continual growth in Christlikeness. This pursuit is both our desire and obligation—one that flows from the heart.

  1. Acknowledge our need for Jesus our advocate (1 John 2:1)

  2. Recognize Jesus as the best and only advocate (1 John 2:1-2)

  3. Understand obedience is a result of salvation not its cause (1 John 2:3-5)

  4. Passionately live like Jesus (1 John 2:6)

  1. What stood out to you from 1 John 2:1-6 or the sermon?

  2. Read 1 John 2:1-2; Rom 8:34; Heb 7:25.

    • Why do we need Jesus as our advocate, and how does He fulfill that role?

    • How does knowing that Jesus advocates for us impact how we respond to sin and seek forgiveness?

  3.  Read 1 John 1:8-10; 2:1; Prov 1:32-33; Rom 6:1-2; Ezekiel 18:32; Col 3:16.

    • What dangers come with minimizing sin, justifying it, or believing it doesn’t matter for Christians?

    • How do believers help each other grow in this area?

  4.  Read 1 John 2:3-5; James 2:17; John 14:15. 

    • If salvation is through faith alone, why does obedience to God’s commands matter?

    • Why do you obey God? Is obedience every challenging? Why?

  5.  Read 1 John 2:6; 2 Cor 5:17; Eph 5:1-2.

    • When you think about Jesus, what qualities stand out to you? 

    • What are the specific ways you are currently working on being like Jesus?
